Houston, TX, November 14, 2010 – There are many stars in the Texas sky and two more were just added. Selena Mitchell was crowned Miss Black Texas USA Talented Teen 2011 and Ocielia Gibson was crowned Miss Black Texas USA 2011 on Sunday, November 14, 2010, at the Sheraton Hotel in Houston, TX in a competition featuring contestants from across Texas in the statewide pageant.
San Antonio resident Selena Mitchell stole the hearts of the judges winning the title. She also was victorious in being named Miss Hospitality and won the talent and evening gown competitions. She also won Miss Hospitality. This Keystone School junior has a passion for service and has recently been awarded the Girls Scouts of USA Gold Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Pin Award three years in a row. She is an entrepreneur with a home-based business called Young Tunes Piano Studio, where she teaches classical piano and theory to youth ages 5 to 11. Mitchell has already began promoting her platform of “Grow, Discover, Fly: Self-Empowerment” with her “Princess for a Day” empowerment program. Recently, she hosted 40 young girls through a series of self-empowerment workshops and is writing a book that focuses on empowering female youth.
Miss Black Central Texas USA Talented Teen Jennifer Ekeh (Interview and Most Photogenic winner) was named first runner-up. Miss Black Harris County USA Talented Teen Lauren Clemons (Miss Congeniality) was second runner-up; Miss Black Smithville USA Talented Teen Kimberly Whalon was the third runner-up; Miss Black Marshall USA Talented Teen Danelle Womack (Fitness winner) was selected as fourth runner-up.
Miss Black Texas USA Ocielia Gibson is a Texas role model. Being a minister, urban etiquette coach, junior debutante coordinator, certified abstinence educator, STD awareness specialist, Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship’s Public School Coordinator, and founder of More Than a Pretty Face, Inc. she is reaching youth and young adults across Texas in a variety of ways. Earning numerous awards and recognition, Gibson was one of Ebony’s magazine Unsung Heroes in 2009. As Miss Black Texas USA she wants to continue on this path with her platform, “More Than a Pretty Face: Redefining Beauty.” Her purpose is to engage, equip, and edify young women to be among those who influence others who are not defined by the hip-hop culture. The multitalented Gibson loves designing, painting, and crafting jewelry for her accessory line. In addition to winning the title of Miss Black Texas USA 2011, Gibson was also selected as the evening gown and fitness winner. In addition she won the Director’s Award for her community service rendered throughout her city.
Miss Black Denton USA Ashleigh Smith (Talent and Director’s Award Leadership winner) was named first runner-up. Miss Black Missouri City USA Savannah Williams (Most Photogenic) was second runner-up; Miss Black Central Texas USA Tamirra Tyler (Interview winner and Miss Cover Girl) was the third runner-up; Miss Black Tomball USA Dymond Hayes (Overall Director’s Award winner) was selected as fourth runner-up.
Miss Black Austin USA Kelli Walker, Miss Black Dallas USA Britney Darnell (Model Me winner), Miss Black Galveston County USA Amber Ferguson, Miss Black Garland USA Ariel Black, and Miss Black Houston USA Allyson Buckner (Miss Congeniality, Miss Hospitality, and Director’s Award Fundraising winner), completed the field of 10 contestants in the 2010 Miss Black Texas USA pageant.
Both Mitchell and Gibson won a prize package that included a college scholarship and the chance to represent Texas on the national stage at the Miss Black USA Talented Teen and Miss Black USA Pageant next summer.
The Miss Black Texas USA Talented Teen and Miss Black Texas USA Pageant is the official preliminary competition for the Miss Black USA Talented Teen and Miss Black USA Pageant.
